We have a winner!

There could be no more appropriate first winner of the Great British Bonus scheme than Newsells Park. Perennially the leading consignor at Tattersalls and one of the most successful breeding operations in England, they stand two prominent stallions in the national stallion roster in Equiano and Nathaniel. And they race quite a few fillies each year too. However, the win by their two year old filly Pelekai at Newcastle gave the management extra satisfaction.

Julian Dollar was very excited about using the Irish based Kodiac on the Newsells Park mare Pelerin. The mating looked perfect and the resulting filly foal did not dampen his enthusiasm. She was a very commercial prospect for Tattersalls Book 1 and he was excited. Then disaster struck just before the sale, when a small set-back meant that she had to miss the auction. There was no option but to race her.

Nine months later there is a smile on Julians face again. His judgement was right about the mating and Pelekai won her first start with Mark Johnston, who trains several for Newsells Park Stud. Not only that, the Great British Bonus of £10,000 and prizemoney for yesterday's all-the-way win will have paid most of her expenses already.

This exemplifies two important facets of the GBB scheme. It is very much inclusive. there will be celebratory drinks downed both in England and Ireland tonight for the OCallaghans will be delighted that their stalwart stallion continues to throw sharp prospects that may run at Royal Ascot. And the scheme already shows that it is a great insurance policy for vendors of British bred fillies. And finally, this filly will surely have guaranteed herself a chance at stud one day, which will be to the future benefit of the Great British broodmare band.
