Jumping For Joy

A milestone was passed today when the first £20,000 bonus was won over jumps in the GBB scheme. And it could not have gone to a more deserving couple.

When POGO I AM won a mares novice hurdle at Stratford over two miles, she provided the best bit of news of the year to her owners Sandie and David Newton in Cornwall. Apart from the stresses of lockdown for COVID-19, they have had to contend with Sandie being on crutches since January following a horrific accident on the farm. However, the £20,000 Great British Bonus has really put a smile back on their faces.

They bred POGO I AM and have her in training with Harry Fry. As Sandie gasped on hearing the news..."That will pay the training fees for a year!" This was their first winner for two years and will be celebrated majorly! "The winning prize money was only £3,400. Earning a bonus of six times the value of the prize money is massive. And it is so good that Harry Fry and his staff can share our good fortune."

When advised about the multiple bonus options, the trainer said that he already had another GBB race lined up at Southwell at the end of the month! "This filly is not very big, but can win another similar race, which would be a massive result for these enthusiastic supporters of my stable."

With just a couple of mares, this couple are genuine Dual Purpose owner/breeders. The mares and followers are part of the family. They use dual purpose stallions such as the sire of this filly in Passing Glance, owned by their good friends David and Kathleen Holmes and now standing at Batsford Stud with Tim Varey. "We are promoting the GBB scheme strongly with our clients. It is just a no-brainer!" was Varey's delighted reaction to the news.
