On Saturday 18th November 2024, STAR MIND stormed to victory in the Restricted Maiden Fillies Stakes at Wolverhampton. Having been purchased from the Tattersalls Autumn Horses in Training Sale just weeks earlier for 7,000gns, the win not only marked a commendable success for the filly and trainer Jack Jones but she also secured a £20,000 Great British Bonus (GBB) for her winning connections.

Of the filly, Jack says "In fairness, credit goes to her owner Stuart Goodwin whose method is to buy GBB fillies - last year he bought a GBB filly called Fengari as his first sole ownership venture and she won a £10,000 bonus on her debut run so it worked out well. STAR MIND was on my shortlist but ultimately, it was Stuart who picked her out. She had a nice pedigree but the full GBB registration was the driving factor behind her purchase."

"We bought her home and she settled well although seemed a little green and we thought she would benefit from cheekpieces". continued Jack. "To buy her for 7,000gns and three weeks later win over £5,000 in prize money and a £20,000 bonus to make over £25,000 is brilliant".

The celebrations were not just restricted to Jack's base at Chestnut Tree Stables as the bonus win propelled GBB beyond its £13 million milestone.

Charlie Newton from the Great British Bonus commented "We're delighted for STAR MIND's owner Stuart and for Jack and his team. The filly won really well for them just week's after being picked up in the sale, its a great result all round!"

The scheme, which is majority funded by the HBLB incentivises and rewards the breeding, buying and racing of British-bred fillies by awarding bonuses of up to £20,000 at a time to the connections of winning fillies including the owner, breeder, trainer, jockey and stable staff.

Charlie continues "GBB is sometimes mistaken for a Breeders' scheme which it simply isn't - it's a scheme for the entire industry. Out of the £13 million paid out, around £8.45 million has been paid out to owners, £2.6m to breeders and the remaining £1.95 million to the trainers, jockeys and stable staff. A GBB win benefits everyone, not least British-bred fillies".
